Our Charter
Preamble:
In order to create a more just and equal society, in accordance with the values of the Haverford College community, and to promote diversity, inclusion, and acceptance of all individuals regardless of background and ability we Democratic college students dedicate ourselves to organizing the participation of like-minded Democratic college students at Haverford College. Central to the HC Dems mission is to cultivate an environment that encourages freedom of expression while representing the diversity of the Haverford College student body that we serve. We are committed to maintaining procedures and processes that foster an inclusive and multicultural body by engaging and recruiting members of the Haverford College community as part of our organization. While our mission is to promote the principles and ideals of the Democratic Party we recognize that all Democrats do not think alike and welcome a multitude of ideas and viewpoints from all of our members. As such, we call for full participation of all students regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, physical handicap, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation. Understanding the importance of participation in the Democratic Party to the preservation of our values and principles, we, Democratic college students hereby associate ourselves and adopt this Charter as the Haverford College Democrats.

HC Dems pledges itself to support the philosophies and the candidates supported by the Democratic National Committee. Furthermore, the HC Dems support all efforts to increase the participation of college students in Democratic affairs. To this end, the HC Dems shall:

Article I - Name and Purpose
Section 1 - Name
- The name of this organization shall be the Haverford College Democrats, hereafter referred to in this document as the HC Democrats or the HC Dems.
HC Dems pledges itself to support the philosophies and the candidates supported by the Democratic National Committee. Furthermore, the HC Dems support all efforts to increase the participation of college students in Democratic affairs. To this end, the HC Dems shall:
- Educate student about the philosophies of the Democratic Party;
- Assist in the election of local, state, and national candidates;
- Effect political change at a local, state, and national level.
Article II - Membership
Section 1 - General Membership
- Any full or part time Haverford College student is eligible for membership in the HC Democrats. Every student, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, physical handicap, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation can attend activities, events, and meetings as a representative of the HC Democrats.
- Active membership is contingent upon attending three (3) events associated with the organization.
- Membership in the general body can be revoked by a two-thirds vote of the executive board.
Section 2 - Executive Membership
Composition and Power of the Executive Board
- The Executive Board shall be composed of: Co-Presidents, Communications Director, Campus Coordinator, Membership Director, and Outreach Director.
- All Executive Board members will be appointed by the Co-Presidents at the end of each school year.
- The Executive Board has the power to appoint and replace any Executive Board position that is vacated.
- The Executive Board has the power to remove any Executive Board member by a two-thirds vote.
- The Executive Board shall determine the agenda and policy of the Haverford College Democrats and coordinate all activities and events.
- Executive Board Duties by Title:
- Co-Presidents - The co-presidents shall be the executive officers of the Haverford College Democrats. They will define the agenda of the HC Dems during their tenure, act as the official representative of the HC Dems to the public, and will be in charge of coordinating with campaigns, the Haverford Twp Dems, and other Democratic groups to inform students of opportunities and plan events. They will carry out the mandates, policies, and directives of the Executive Board and will preside over all members or appoint someone to do so.
- Communications Director - The communications director shall be responsible for all activities regarding communication. This includes maintaining social media accounts for the HC Dems, maintaining the HC Dems website along with the Co-Presidents, and overseeing communications to registered Democrats on campus. They shall also keep accurate records of the Haverford College Democrats activities including meeting minutes.
- Campus Coordinator - The campus coordinator shall be responsible for reserving spaces for events, coordinating with other organizations and groups on campus on holding events, and in aiding the Communications Director in advertising events on campus through non-digital means.
- Membership Director - The membership director shall be responsible for all activities regarding membership, including recruiting and retaining membership as well as keeping track of participation and interests of members in the organization.
- Outreach Director - The outreach director shall be responsible for reaching out to groups and organizations that are not part of the Democratic Party but support liberal and progressive causes that align with the values of the Democratic Party, organizing partnerships between the HC Dems and these groups, and working with the Campus Coordinator regarding on-campus initiatives involving these groups.
Article III - Endorsements
- The Executive Board may choose to endorse a candidate in a Democratic primary and put the resources of the HC Dems in support of that candidate’s campaign if a consensus has been reached among all members regarding who to endorse.
- The Constitution may be amended by a two-thirds majority vote of the Executive Board.
- All amendments to the Constitution are effective immediately after being voted upon.
